Chains of Deceit by Paul C. Alexander (Idol / Virgin Publishing, 1997)
A gay erotic thriller from Idol, Virgin Publishing's now-defunct homoerotic fiction imprint. Written by Paul C. Alexander, published September 1997.
Journalist Nathan Dexter's life is upended when he meets Scott, a young student who seems to offer everything he has been looking for. Then Nathan's best friend disappears, and the trail leads into a sinister slavery ring rumoured to be operating out of London's leather scene. To rescue their friend, Nathan and Scott go undercover, moving from the leather bars of London and Amsterdam to the backrooms of New York, only to find that they are themselves being watched, and that nobody can be trusted, possibly not even each other.
Cover design by Slatter-Anderson. Cover photograph by Colin Clarke. Adult fiction, originally retailed at £6.99.
Chains of Deceit is one of the earliest releases on the Idol imprint, appearing in 1997 alongside Robert Black's Hall of Mirrors. The book stands out in the catalogue for combining gay erotica with the structure of an international crime thriller, with appeal to readers of leather scene fiction, gay noir, and conspiracy novels as well as collectors of vintage gay paperbacks. The Idol imprint has been out of print for years and copies are increasingly hard to source.
